Young Eagle Opens a Flight School
Travis Morton is a little like the Energizer Bunny. He
has kept going and going, earning more and more ratings ever
since he attained his private pilot certificate. Now he's
opened his own flight school in hopes of sharing his love of
flight with others. Travis said he became interested in
aviation when he was about 12 after his neighbor, a pilot,
recommended he go to the Sonoma
Skypark in California for a Young Eagles ride.

Jetman
Flies Above Grand Canyon
Forget about watching birds soar above the Grand Canyon.
Weeks ago, you could have seen Yves Rossy doing it instead.
According to a statement, Yves, known as "Jetman,"
reached speeds up to 190 mph while flying over the canyon,
thanks to four JetCat engines on his back and a 6-1/2-foot
wing that he steers by moving his head and arms. Read

'Miracle on the Hudson' Airliner as it Completes Flight by
Truck
The Airbus A320 that landed in the Hudson River in
January 2009 after hitting a flock of Canada Geese is on its
way to its intended destination. US Air Flight 1549, piloted
by Young Eagles Co-Chairmen Sully Sullenberger and Jeff
Skiles, hit the geese minutes after takeoff from New York's
LaGuardia Airport and had to land in the river after both
its engines failed. The aircraft has been in pieces in New
Jersey for two years, but now the plane's parts are headed
to the Carolinas Aviation Museum at the Charlotte/ Douglas
International Airport, where it will eventually be
reassembled and put on display. Follow
its progress from New Jersey to North Carolina live!

Tyler's
Tailwind
By Tyler Whitney, for
Aviation Insider, EAA 1019639
I'm sure
you've seen the ads and other articles in previous newsletter
issues about different programs offered to Young Eagles. EAA
gives many perks and offers sponsored by companies involved in
aviation; a number of you already have used some of these
services.
After you
took your Young Eagles Flight, you were probably given a
logbook with a certificate that contained a unique code. With
that code was a website where you can sign up for Sporty's
online training course. If you didn't get a certificate, don't
worry; all you have to do is go to the Young
Eagles website and click on the box that says, "I do
not have my Activation Code," as you complete the form.
Once you're signed up, you'll be given a username and password
for Sporty's Private Pilot Online Training Course.
|
|
This
amazing website is complete with interactive videos and
practice test for your written exam. When you finish the
course and go through the test, you'll be able to take your
FAA written test when you turn 15, and if you pass, EAA will
reimburse you for the test!
Another perk
for Young Eagles is a free student membership to EAA. With
your EAA membership, you'll receive Sport Aviation
magazine online, free admission to 300 science and technology
museums in America, and student membership to the Academy of
Model Aeronautics. These things and more are available on the Young
Eagles website. Being a Young Eagle not only gives you a
free airplane ride but many free perks available only to you!
Each
issue, Tyler Whitney of Michigan provides a Young
Eagle-turned-Young Eagle pilot perspective on aviation. Tyler
was the first Young Eagle to pass his private pilot knowledge
exam after completing the Sporty's Complete Pilot Training
Course.
